Oxford Travel Guide

There is no other town steeped in history, education and learning as much as Oxford. It is the oldest university town in England, with the University of Oxford dating back to the 12th century. The architecture and general ambience of Oxford preserves its heritage, with a mix of buildings as old as the 13th century, while some being just a few years old.

It is easy to explore Oxford on foot, as it is compact and pedestrian friendly. Being a university town, cyclists are abundant and bicycles seem to be the preferred way to travel. College buildings, museums, library buildings and chapels are spread all over town as opposed to being confined to a campus, so walking in Oxford is really the best way to get a good feel of the place.

Some of the sights in Oxford include, the Bodleian Library, one of the oldest libraries in Europe. The Sheldonian Theatre is the first major building to be commissioned to Sir Christopher Wren and also recently voted as the most uncomfortable theatre in England! Work today can take people far from home. Sometimes, people have to go on extended work sessions to places away from home. It can be exciting to see and experience different places at first, but sooner or later one is bound to start missing their family, home etc.

While on extended stays away from home, it is important to make sure the accommodation facilities are comfortable and as homely as possible. The less inviting and warm your living space is, the more likely you are to be lonely, which in turn is likely to affect your performance at work.

This is not to say that any commercial accommodation service can replace your own home and the joy of being with your family, but it only makes sense to make your stay as comfortable as possible. It is important to differentiate between your workspace and your home space. If you’re a consultant and work from your hotel, make sure you don’t turn your entire suite/room into a work place. Litter Free Highways!

While on travel to America recently, I came across this interesting programme known as adopt a highway or sponsor a highway. It is a wonderful scheme in which organisations can adopt a part or section of a highway and commit to keep it litter free. A great way to get the community involved in maintaining national infrastructure.

In exchange for regularly keeping the highway free of litter, the organisation is allowed to have their name on a sign in the section of highway they maintain. Picking up waste on a motorway is bound to be an expensive service, so involving volunteers in the job sounds like a brilliant idea!

The first image that came to my mind was American Boy Scouts running around the highway picking up cans and so forth. Obviously I was wrong, because sensibly, organisations sponsoring a highway section hire professional companies to pick up litter along the speedy and presumably dangerous freeways. (more...)

A Brief History of the University of Oxford

Oxford is one of the most visited small cities in the world. With a population of just under 165,000, Oxford welcomes over 3.2 million guests each year. Most come to see the famous medieval University that is responsible for its growth.

Founded in the 12th century, the University of Oxford is the oldest English-speaking University in the world. Before that, the city was little more than a military fort between two warring kingdoms. A century later, the fort became a small town when King Henry II granted its citizens rights and exemptions from taxes.

As a result, a number of prominent religious houses were established in and around the city. The University was founded a century later. Ibiza, the Clubbers Dream
